Why Movement Matters: The Power of Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind. Moving your body every day protects your health, boosts your energy, and helps you feel better.

1. Keeps Your Heart Healthy

  • Fights disease: Daily exercise keeps your blood flowing smoothly. This lowers your risk of serious issues like heart disease and strokes later in life.
  • Improves blood flow: Being active most days can help control your blood pressure and keep your blood vessels healthy.

2. Helps with Energy and Muscle Strength

  • Defeats fatigue: When you exercise, your heart delivers more oxygen and nutrients to your body. This gives you more energy to get through the day.
  • Builds strong bones: Physical activity can help keep your muscles and bones strong.

3. Sharpens Your Mind and Lifts Your Mood

  • Reduces stress: Exercise releases natural brain chemicals called endorphins. These chemicals are natural mood lifters that help you feel relaxed and less anxious.
  • Improves sleep: Getting active during the day helps you fall asleep faster and get better rest at night, so you wake up feeling refreshed.

How Much Do You Need?

Health experts recommend that adults get 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. The good news is that you do not need a gym membership to stay fit.

Simple ways to get moving include:

  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Getting out for a walk or bike ride
  • Dancing, cleaning or doing yard work.

Every little bit of movement counts; even 10 or 15 minutes of activity is good for your body. Start with activities you enjoy, and keep your body moving!
